Bunson: and important.
This comic makes very little sense to my sweetheart. But if you have a squidy brain like mine it might make sense to you.
Related comics – or what’s the deal with the geometrical shapes?
Bunson Hoppydew is behind one of the Thing 1 with a blue triangle shape on his head.
Thing 1: Have you seen my feelings?
Thing 2: Yes!
Bunson has hopped out to sit between the two Things. Thing 1 looks sad.
Thing 1: Those are my feelings!
Bunson: really?
Thing 1 looks angry. The triangle on Bunson’s head has turned into a square.
Thing 1: Yes
Bunson: oh
The square on Bunson’s head has turned into a circle. The two Things stare out towards the viewer. Bunson smiles.
Bunson: Thanks!
If dreams really did come true I know I’d be in a lot of trouble. And I would never go into a shopping mall again, those places are scary!
A little spike comes out of Thing 1’s head.
More spikes come out along its back.
A whole ridge of spikes go all the way down Thing 1’s body
Thing 1: You’re right!
Thing 1 has strange ram-like horns and many lumpy bumps along its body and doesn’t look terribly happy about the situation.
Thing 1: Sometimes dreams do come true
Bunson Hoppydew sits inside Boot.
Bunson: I am tired
Bunson’s ears dance in the air. There’s music, Sock goes Spoing.
Bunson’s ears dance even more, there’s more music. Sock goes Froom!
Bunson sits still and smiles at us. Sock sleeps draped over Boot, zzzzz.
Bunson: and happy
As I was inking this I found myself thinking of Rajan Khanna’s short story Flowing Shapes (you can listen to it free on Escape Pod).
I love shape shifters and the interplay of consciousness with physical form. It’s always cool to see someone else do interesting things with shape shifters. I bet Rajan’s ocular physics composting in my subconscious inspired this comic.
Edit: And my sweetheart has pointed out that I am hysterically funny when I try to wink. He is an excellent winker, apparently my winks look more like I’m scrunching up my entire face with a very strange blink. So my sweetie’s awesome, well practiced winks are also inspiration.
And that is why creative influence and inspiration is often more like compost, sneaky sneaky compost than a direct line… and it’s important to manage your compost well. Manage the ph and make sure it doesn’t get to acid or sour, water it and grind up lots of things into it.
Thing 1’s eyes are drawn as forward leaning lines with dots, instead of two ovals with dots.
Thing 2: How do you do it?
Thing 1’s eyes are lines with dots drawn differently.
Thing 1: Do what?
Thing 2: The thing with your eyes
Thing 1 has it’s eyes drawn slightly differently.
Thing 1: Practice
Thing 2’s eyes are several lines looking weird and all over the place.
Thing 1: Maybe lots of practice
Thing 1: zzz
Thing 2: I can’t sleep
Thing 1: zzz
Thing 2: I’m too sad too worried too grumpy too stupid too lazy too tired + not enough
Thing 1: zzz
Thing 2: Things I have done + haven’t done I don’t know what to do
Thing 1: zzzz
Thing 1 snuggles onto Thing 2 in its sleep. Thing 2 smiles.
I asked Mike to inspire me, so he gave me an idea. I changed the idea, and here it is 🙂
The Things look up.
SFX: VROOM
The Things look somewhat concerned.
SFX: screee!
The Things smile to see Skate zooming past them. Bunson Hoppydew wearing goggles sitting in Skate and Sock is perched on the nose of Skate.
For this comic I asked Kath Nyborg what sort of thing she wanted the Things to talk about and that led to this. I’ve been wanting to send the Things to the moon for some time now. Why? Science! Why is science my answer? Because the world, solar system and universe are amazing places.
Thing 2: we’re on the moon!
Thing 1: I brought cake!
Thing 2: I didn’t bring anything.
Thing 1: You brought your awesome!
The Things are on the moon, the earth is rising behind them. Bunson is in the background eating a slice of cake.
Thing 1: Did you eat the cake?
Thing 2: no, did you?
Bunson is alone on the moon peaking over the curve of the horizon.
Bunson is frolicking along on the moon.
Bunson is frolicking upside down on the moon and his ears have curled around in sproings.

Bunson Hoppydew looking out at the viewer, one pupil is a little dilated and he looks a bit droopy.
Bunson with his head flopped forwards.
Bunson has jerked his head upright but his eyes are unsteady and he doesn’t look well.
