A black cat walks on Liz’s head, claws digging in. Little Liz: I’m scared of being seen. A black cat has grabbed onto Liz’s face in slightly face-hugger style. • Caption: 1 month after psychosis. Little Liz is holding a copy of Waking up Naked in Strange Places by Julie McGalliard. Little Liz: I’d like to read this book, but I’m in so much pain words make me nauseous. Caption: 6 months after Little Liz: I’d like to read this book, but it’s so painful just reading the books I need to read. Caption: 1 year after Little Liz: I’d like to read this book, but reading about a religious sect terrifies me. I don’t like spending a moment with charismatic figures who are harming the sanity of others. I used to be such a reader, I can’t imagine being that person again.

  • Little Liz: Working with my health care team, I tried to reduce one of my medications. Little Liz: But even after a few weeks, my emotions more ragged and my existential angst kept ramping up. Little Liz shouts: The world is on fire!* * The world being in escalating crisis didn’t help either. Little Liz: So, I went back to my old dose. At first, I felt like a bit of a failure. I was so excited at the prospect. Little Liz: But at least I know the med actually does something. And at least I know I can recognize issues and increase my meds again if I need to.

  • Talk to Someone webcomic transcript Little Liz shouts: I HAVE complicated feelings about a thing! Little Liz: I need to talk about it. Maybe I could post on Facebook about it… but what if x or y or nuance gets lost… it’s complicated. I could reach out to a specific person and talk to them about it. Little Liz looks down: I could say “I ought to just know this by now!” Little Liz looks up: But instead, I’ll say, you’re never too old to practice the fundamentals.

  • I'm at the Graphic Medicine Conference in Chicago right now, and feeling so emotionally validated. It's nice to meet up with new folks and old, put bodies on faces I've only experienced in Zoom. There is a baseline and critical mass of intersectionality here that is so refreshing. The validation here certainly feels nice (at least these days, I used to get what I called validation diabetes, I'd get an enormous sugar rush, but then I'd also get a massive sugar crash and feel so worthless and desperate for more validation. I'm glad I've got my validation insulin levels in a better place these days ;-)) Thanks to all my patrons and a special big extra thanks to Kate Webb, Erik Owomoyela, Xander Odell and Stuart Barrow. Validation Comic Transcript Little Liz: I've found the best way to get emotional validation. Little Liz: Is to get to a place where you don't need emotional validation. Little Liz: Lik fixing a hole in a bucket, rather than just trying to fill it up. Dog comes bounding in full of love and excitement. Dog: You're the Best! Little Liz: And wow, this feels even better with a less leaky bucket.
